VanVlymen was nominated by a student, who called her the, "kind of advisor who goes above and beyond for their students."

The student said VanVlymen sends out weekly email reminders about upcoming functions, dates to remember and words of encouragement.

"She is always available to talk and support her students, and go the extra mile for whatever will best help students," the nominator said. "I have attended two other colleges before attending WIU and I have never had such a welcoming and helpful advisor. There are not enough kind words that could be said about this nominee, as she emulates exactly what an academic advisor should be."

The nominee added that VanVlymen recognizes her when they meet in public.

"She talked with me about how I was doing and how I had been adjusting to Western," the nominee said. "She is exactly the kind of person who deserves to be the academic advisor of the month. She is caring of her students, respectful of personal issues and just passionate about her career and students."
