After recently qualifying for the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament Tokyo 2020, the Honduran Football Federation (FENAFUTH) was able to keep its Olympic dream alive through funding that allowed it to overcome the crisis brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Synthetic pitches, and the “Casa de la H” technical centre, where the Honduran national team attends training camps and which boasts state-of-the-art facilities including a hotel and a gym, are the pillars that will build the future of Honduran football at all levels.

FIFA has assisted FENAFUTH in several ways, including strategic matters, reinforcement of their development department, registration tools like FIFA Connect, Forward projects or with reinforcements of the competitions and national teams’ activities of the country.

One of the first big projects thanks to the FIFA Forward Programme was the refurbishment of Estadio Infantil Birichiche situated in the capital of the country, Tegucigalpa. It was completed in November 2019 and officially inaugurated by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

FIFA Forward is also helping with the refurbishment and renewal of the Technical Centre of the federation, situated in Siguatepeque, an equidistant location between Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula. The refurbishment of the building for national teams as well as the installation of a synthetic pitch were projects part of this renewal, inaugurated officially in November 2020, despite the pandemic, during the annual Congress of the federation.

Other FIFA Forward projects implemented in the federation have been capacity building activities and national teams’ support, providing a holistic boost for the different activities the FA is responsible for.

Furthermore, the federation also benefited from the FIFA COVID-19 Relief Plan which was rolled out during 2020. The Relief Plan has helped Honduran clubs, with the funds distributed equally between the teams in the first division. The Relief Plan enabled the survival of football financially during a difficult time caused by the global pandemic.

FIFA is helping the member association in delivering further operations by conceding a loan for the amount of USD 2.6 million that will enable FENAFUTH to maintain daily operations and the current level of football excellence in the country.
