Center for Women, Gender and Global Leadership at Howard University.

WASHINGTON,  Today, Howard University President Wayne A. I. Frederick introduced a $1 million present from Heather and Jim Murren to launch the Center for Women, Gender and Global Leadership at Howard University. The present kicks off a multi-million fundraising effort for what will be an interdisciplinary, student-centered, faculty-led institute that works with expert applications in health, business, communications and law, as well as majors in the arts and sciences.

"We are extremely grateful to Trustee Jim Murren and Mrs. Heather Hay Murren for this generous $1 million gift to create the Center for Women, Gender and Global Leadership at Howard University. Our students' college experiences will be substantially enriched thru this program, which will empower Black girls to continue to take their rightful place as leaders in each and every facet of our society and the international community," says President Frederick.

The Center will be led with the aid of J. Jarpa Dawuni, Esq., Ph.D., Howard's esteemed partner professor of political science, who has been diagnosed as a Fulbright Specialist Scholar and a Carnegie African Diaspora Fellow. The Center's academic center of attention will encompass producing modern and theoretically grounded research and creating a statistics center on issues of ladies and gender in the United States and the international Black diaspora. The Center will supply possibilities for college students via scholarships and internships. Dawuni defined that the Center will have four areas of focus: student-centered educating and learning; high-impact college research, publications and grant-making; community-centered service learning; and international advocacy. "The vision of the Center for Women, Gender and Global Leadership is to prepare future leaders who are gender-conscious and grounded in Black feminist awareness via collaboration with faculty on research, provider gaining knowledge of and international engagement," she says. "The profession pipeline mission will act as a transformational method for opening up expert opportunities and making ready our college students for management in their chosen careers."

Anyah Gilmore-Jones, a senior political science major, stated the Center will put together students to make a contribution to the progressiveness of society as a whole, both regionally and globally. She would like to see applications that tackle the study of women, gender and international research and be able to work with faculty on lookup to highlight how these subjects affect the world in which we live.

"Many times, we neglect the complexity gender has in relation to the trip of identifying as girls whilst interacting with unique cultural backgrounds and identities," says Gilmore-Jones. "Gender is regularly conflated with the simplistic notion of being solely 'feminine' or 'masculine.' The establishment of this Center will promote the enlargement of knowledge, necessary thinking, organizing and the mastering of global perspectives on feminist and gender issues."

One of Dawuni's former students, M. Isabelle Chaudry, Esq., studied regulation at Howard University and now has a rewarding career as senior coverage manager at the National Women's Health Network. As an legal professional who leads work on intersecting problems of women's health, human rights and social justice, Chaudry believes access to the new Center will have a profound affect on the next technology of women studying at Howard.
